The middle of July is at the height of the GAA season when games are in full swing and when great interest is created by the onset of the championship. In the GAA world the league is never treated with the same reverence as the championship. That is not to say that winning a league is to be scoffed at, far from it, but many see the league campaigns as a training ground for the real thing which lies ahead. A good league run does not guarantee championship success but likewise poor league form can often be turned around in the main competition. Seniors So far in 2009, our seniors have performed very well. After going down narrowly to Ogonnelloe in the opening fixture, the team has put together a seven run winning sequence defeating Broadford, Killanena, Feakle, Ennistymon, Clarecastle, Sixmilebridge and Bodyke. As we go to press the team have just one league game remaining against Smith O'Brien's from Killaloe. A win will put Scariff into the knockout stages of the Clare Cup, a competition we last won in 1995. Scariff's remaining senior championship games against Inagh – Kilnamona, Tulla and Clonlara are expected to go continue from August as scheduled in the Co. Board master fixtures plan now that Clare are no longer in the All-Ireland series. Juniors For our Junior A team, the league campaign has concluded. The team won three games, lost two and just missed out on qualifying for the latter stages of the competition. Having emerged from the Junior B ranks in 2008, it was a creditable showing by the team even though they will be disappointed not to have gone a little further. The Junior A championship begins on Saturday July 18th with a game against O'Callaghan's Mills in Bodyke. Our other opponents in the group will be Clooney – Quin, Inagh – Kilnamona and Corofin. Under age success Congratulations to our under 14 team who won a county title on Friday July 3rd with a hard fought victory over Tulla. These are the adult players of the coming years and we look forward to their arrival in the Junior and Senior ranks. SCARIFF SENIOR CLUB AGM The AGM of the Scariff Hurling Club was held on Saturday, December 1 in the GAA hall. See the Committee page for newly elected officers. The club would like to wish them all the best for the coming year. DINNER DANCE 2008 The annual dinner dance will be held on the 1st of February in McNamara's Bar. Tickets are €30 each, and available from any committee member. Word For Word will be providing the music, and the 1982 team will be having a re-union on the night, so it should be a great night. Looking forward to seeing all the previous teams, and current camogie and senior hurling team. ALL WEATHER PITCHMinister of State, Tony Killeen officially "turned the sod" on the new All-Weather pitch in Scariff on Friday, November 30th. In his address, he thanked the Scariff Club for inviting him and looked forward to returning when the project is completed. Munster Council Chairma, Jimmy O'Gorman also congratulated Scariff on the projhect and on the great condition of the hurling pitch. He wished Clare and Waterford the best of luck in their upcoming championship match next May which will take place in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick. He also thanked out-going Munster Council Treasurer, Ger Hickey on this outstanding service given over the last 3 years and wished him all the best for the future. Scariff Hurling Club Chairman, John Jones thanked everyone involved in making the project a reality especially the sponsors for buying signs and to those whgo have given interest free loans to the club. The event was also attended by Joe Carey TD, Cllr. Pat Hayes, Cllr. Joe Cooney and Robert Frost Munster Council Delegate. Refreshments were served in the GAA hall afterwards. Many thanks to Mary Crotty, Peggy Collins and Mary Slattery. When completed, the All-Weather pitch will be 70m X 35m and will be able to facilitate tournaments at underage levels. It will also be available to rent out to other clubs on an hourly basis. The development is due to be completed early in the Spring of 2008. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
