Junior A Championship

O'Callaghan's Mills 2-10 Scariff 2-08

O'Callaghan's Mills defeated Scariff in this close, tense encounter in the first round of the 2009 Junior A championship played in Tuamgraney on Saturday.

The Mills started strongly and registered their intent with a Jim Cleary goal after seven minutes. With the Mills leading by 1-05 to 0-04 midway through the half, Scariff were in danger of being left behind. However, a Paul O'Sullivan goal after 19 minutes kick started a Scariff revival. A second goal from a close in free just before the break from Tom McMahon saw Scariff draw level at the break 2-06 to 1-09.

The second half was strange in that there were only four scores. The decisive one came in the very first minute Rory Neville crashed home a goal for the Mills from an acute angle and this, as it turned out, decided the result. Both teams gave everything they had all through the second period but defences were on top and scores were hard to come by. The Mills have to thank their full back Noel Nash who gave an outstanding display to foil many Scariff attacks. Despite being on the offensive for much of the half, the Scariff men were unable to break down a resolute and the Mills scored a deserved 2 point win.
